MOPA brings you episode five of its lecture series Raga Shilpa.
Some compositions transcend their place in a composer’s repertoire to become part of the collective memory of a musical tradition. What makes a kriti iconic? Is it the beauty of its melodic architecture, the poetry and imagery of its sahitya, its scope for manodharma, or the manner in which generations of musicians have embraced and reimagined it?
In this episode, Dr Sriram Parasuram looks at Muttuswami Dikshitar’s iconic compositions through these dimensions - examining the compositional design and musical imagination that have enabled certain works to acquire an enduring stature. It is an exploration of how a composition becomes not merely celebrated but a living part of the musical consciousness.
At the end of the episode, KS Vishnudev renders the composition Shree Subrahmanyaya namaste in the raga Kambhoji, with Praveen Sparsh on the mrdangam.
