Yellow Jackets Were The Least Of My Problems

By the end, they were the least of my problems. Late August is prime time for aggressive ground-nesting yellow jackets, and before testing Baumalight’s new forestry mulcher on the mini skid, I wanted to show exactly why I was so hesitant to start mowing through thick brush on an open-station machine. I found a yellow jacket nest beside the concrete block foundation of my house and used the shop-vac method to remove it without getting stung. After letting the vac run for a couple hours, I opened it up and counted 618 yellow jackets. Then it was time to test the new Baumalight forestry mulcher. Just like I was worried about, I ended up finding two large yellow jacket nests while working. On the first one, I got lucky and noticed a single yellow jacket land on the loader before I realized a swarm was starting around me. I got out of there just in time. For the rest of that area, I switched over to my excavator-mounted Baumalight MX330 flail mulcher so I could work from inside the cab—and I was very thankful I did, because I found another nest. After that, I still wanted to put the mini skid mulcher through a better test on woody material, so I headed into the woods to tackle saplings and brush ranging from roughly 1” up to 5”. That’s when things really went sideways. I hooked a grapevine that was tied into a dead cherry tree and ended up pulling a large limb down right toward myself. I walked away with a few scratches and a bruised hip, but it could have been a whole lot worse. This one turned into quite a bit more than a simple attachment demo.
