From childhood, girls receive messages about how they should behave, what they should look like, whom they should become, and what is expected of them as women. These messages come from family, culture, school, relationships, society and increasingly, the internet.
But how do these expectations shape the women girls believe they should become? And are we giving them the freedom to decide for themselves?
In this episode of CYâta, I sit down with Andiswa Sabani to explore how girls learn about womanhood, the differences between how we raise girls and boys, and the expectations we place on girls as they grow up.
We discuss the importance of family in laying a foundation, the influence of the internet, the relationship between achievement and self-worth, and the messages girls receive about marriage, motherhood, ambition, strength and choice.
Andiswa also reflects on what she was taught about being a woman, what she wants to teach girls differently, and what she believes every girl should understand about becoming a woman.
This conversation invites us to examine not only what we intentionally teach girls, but also what they learn from the expectations we reinforce every day.
