When we look at our hurting communities, we often talk about the symptoms: unemployment and broken families. But when it comes to our children's future, we have to ask the hard question: Who is failing our schools? Is it the system, the governing structures or have we left out the very people who can save them? In this episode of The Porter’s Voice, hosts Keith Nkuna and Lebo Pelesane dive deep into the heart of school governance in our democratic society. We sit down with Mr. Matakanye Matakanya who is the General Secretary of the National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGB) in South Africa to trace how our schools transitioned from the homeland-era management councils and PTSAs into the democratic, fully inclusive bodies we have today. In this episode, we tackle the tough questions: The Transition from the Past: How we moved from historical homeland school structures into a democratic, inclusive system post-1994. The 5 Core Components of SGBs: Why a functional high school SGB must include the principal, parents, teachers, students (from Grade 8), and support staff to succeed. Inclusion as a Solution: Why giving support staff and everyone in the school ecosystem a voice is a fundamental part of governing schools democratically. The Porter’s Voice is not just another podcast; it is a solution-driven platform. We believe that by going straight to our community leaders, protectors, families, and government representatives, we can address the root causes of our challenges and reclaim our communities. 🔔 Subscribe to the channel to stay updated on solution-driven dialogues that impact your family and community! 💬 Have your say: Who do you think is failing our schools today?
