Keep looking and you'll find Ross again — a Black family, enrolled by the United States government as Cherokee Freedmen. Do the same for Vann. Twice. Adair, twice. Boudinot, Starr, Rogers, Beck, Bean, Downing, Landrum, Foreman — twice each. It isn't a filing error. There were two lists. And which list your ancestor is on tells you which side of a household they were standing on. Most families who go looking search the wrong one — and the reason is deliberate.
