In September 1991, two hikers found a body in the ice on a high Alpine pass, with a copper axe lying near him. Who else had been on that mountain with him? This video follows the man we call Otzi from the day he was found, through the recovery and the dating, to the scan that found an arrowhead in his shoulder. It looks at the 2003 blood tests that found DNA from four other people on his gear, and at the competing readings of what they mean. It also covers the 2012 microscope work on how quickly he died. Every reading of his last days is a hypothesis from a named researcher or study, and the video says so. What this covers: How a drawing of an axe, a dating lab and a border survey turned a "recent climber" into a Copper Age man What he carried, and what he had eaten before he died The 2001 scan that found a flint arrowhead and ended the exposure idea Four people's DNA on his arrowhead, knife and coat, and how Tom Loy read it Competing readings: Loy's fight, a ritual sacrifice, one arrow and two victims The 2012 blood-cell work that says he died within minutes The story behind the thing. Narration is computer-generated (text-to-speech); research, script and drawings are original. Wren S O U R C E S DISCOVERY AND THE MAN Wikipedia, Otzi: the find on 19 September 1991, the Simons, the recovery to 23 September, Messner and the axe, the border survey (92.56 m inside Italy), dating (3359 to 3105 BC), age, height, gear, tattoos, last meal, pollen, the 2001 scan, head and hand injuries, the 2023 genome (about 90% Anatolian farmer ancestry, no Steppe ancestry), the 61 tattoos in 19 groups, the axe (9.5 cm head, almost pure copper), the wheat in his stomach, the visitor interviews, the 2024 arm study, competing readings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96tzi South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology: "over 5300 years", the Copper Age, and the statement that he was murdered at Tisenjoch with no details. https://www.iceman.it/en/the-iceman/ THE ARROWHEAD Seattle Times, 26 July 2001: the CT scans made to study his ribs, the flint arrowhead about an inch long, the museum president and director, and the curator's view that he probably survived a few hours. https://archive.seattletimes.com/arch... National Geographic, 2012: the arrow wound is described as on his back there, while Wikipedia gives the left shoulder. The video reports both. https://nationalgeographic.com/news/2... THE BLOOD EVIDENCE ABC Science, 2003 (Tom Loy, University of Queensland, speaking to the press): four people's blood on arrows, knife and coat, the 24 to 48 hour combat suggestion, two opponents, shooting two people and retrieving an arrow, a possible wounded companion, cuts on hands, wrists and ribs. These are Loy's interpretations. The coverage does not say whether the work was peer reviewed or in which journal. https://www.abc.net.au/science/articl... Wikipedia: how the four profiles were distributed (one knife, two on one arrowhead, one coat), and the ritual sacrifice, one arrow two victims, and arrow removal readings. None is established. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96tzi THE GENOME AND THE WOUND Keller et al. 2012, Nature Communications: genome work showing lactose intolerance and heart disease risk; a 2013 reanalysis (Ames et al.) found most Borrelia sequences could not be assigned to a species. https://ideas.repec.org/a/nat/natcom/... National Geographic, 2012: Albert Zink's atomic force microscope work, doughnut-shaped red blood cells, fibrin, quick death, and the caveat that pollen or bacteria can mimic red blood cells. https://nationalgeographic.com/news/2... OWN ARITHMETIC 23 September minus 19 September 1991 is four days. 2001 minus 1991 is ten years. #Otzi #Iceman #ColdCase #History #Archaeology
