SURVIVOR UK 2002 | SURVIVOR: PANAMA One year after Survivor first arrived on British television, ITV returned to the format with a brand-new cast, a brand-new presenter and an entirely new location. Survivor UK 2002, also known as Survivor: Panama, took place in the spectacular Bocas del Toro Archipelago on the Caribbean coast of Panama. Filming took place from 18 January to 23 February 2002, with the contestants spending 37 days in the game. The series was broadcast on ITV from 13 March to 29 May 2002. This time, the number of contestants was reduced from 16 to 12, all competing for the same £1 million prize and the title of Britain’s Ultimate Survivor. The second series also saw a change behind the camera. Following the first season, Mark Austin and John Leslie were replaced by a single presenter, Mark Nicholas, the cricket broadcaster who would guide viewers through the contestants’ 37-day adventure in Panama. 🐸 NORTH ISLAND — The Frog Tribe The first of the two starting tribes was North Island, represented by a frog. The six original North Island castaways were: • Drew Agger — 27, Firefighter • Dave Porter — 55, Retired Firefighter • Meeta Bose — 34, Financial Manager • Tayfun Kadioglu — 27, Professional Latin-American Dancer • Helen Carney — 22, Hotel Worker • Alastair Brogan — 34, Oil Company Director 🐢 SOUTH ISLAND — The Turtle Tribe Opposing them was South Island, represented by a turtle. Its six original members were: • Jonny Gibb — 30, Police Detective • John Dalzell — 32, Former Marine / Law Worker • Susannah Moffatt — 27, Teacher • Lee Capon — 25, Car Sales Manager • Bridget Griffiths — 43, Shepherdess • Sarah McCombie — 22, Financial Trader The two tribes battled through the opening stages of the game before the remaining eight contestants merged on Day 17 into a single tribe named Columbus, after Christopher Columbus. From that point, the competition became an individual battle for a place at the Final Two. The 2002 season also introduced an unusual element to the final result: alongside the six eliminated contestants who made up the jury, the British public received an additional jury vote through televoting.
