Sometimes it can be seem Fell running can be a scary thought for beginners! Here are some top tips to get you started. 1. Get rid of any ‘PB’ notions, 5 and 10km times don’t matter - even more reason to just enjoy it 2. Put time into strength and stability work - the terrain can be rough. Wobble cushions are cheap online and brilliant for ankles! 3. Be extra careful with your gel wrappers and rubbish, litter on the fells is a massive no-no. Don’t wall hop, wait your turn for stiles or you’ll damage property and even heritage with dry stone walls 4. Challenge yourself to have a go at map and compass navigating, it’s not essential for all fell races but it is a great skill to have 5. Join a local club so you can go out with experienced people who can help you in a non-race environment. Lots have beginners or improver groups! Some of the best bits 1. Fell races are CHEAP! Some as little as a fiver and never usually more than a tenner, a lot are still pay on the day (check race entry) 2. Great atmosphere and friendly runners, mixture of abilities so no pressure. I have found there is a lot of supportive words on the way round from people which keeps you going 3. Amazingly scenic locations – makes the hills so worthwhile! 4. Massive feeling of achievement 5. Don’t expect a medal - Tea, cake and sometimes beer at the end!
