MORE THAN A CROSS — Kenneth E. Mills
“More Than a Cross” looks beyond the wood Jesus carried toward Calvary and remembers the greater burden He willingly bore.
With every step, He carried the weight of sin, the need for mercy, and the hope of salvation for people who had not even been born yet. The stripes, the thorns, the nails, and the cross tell us what happened that day—but love tells us why He stayed.
He could have called the hosts of Heaven. He could have stopped it. But He chose the road to Calvary for every sinner who would ever need forgiveness—including you and me.
What looked like defeat became victory. What looked like an ending became the beginning of redemption.
He carried more than a cross that day.
He carried you.
He carried me.
My prayer is that this song reminds someone today just how far His love was willing to go.

LYRICS
[Verse 1]
They saw a cross upon His shoulder,
They saw the blood upon His face,
But they could never see the burden
He bore for all the human race.
With every step He took toward Calvary,
Our salvation was on His mind;
He carried more than wood upon Him,
He carried yours and He carried mine.
[Chorus]
He carried more than a cross that day,
He carried every soul along the way;
Through every stripe and every thorn,
He saw the ones not even born.
Love kept Him walking toward Calvary,
Knowing that cross would set us free;
He carried more than a cross that day—
He carried you, He carried me.
[Verse 2]
They pressed the thorns upon His brow,
And mocked the King who wore that crown;
The cruel whip had torn His body,
Still His love would not back down.
He could have called the hosts of Heaven,
But love had brought Him there to stay;
For every sinner needing mercy,
He chose to bear our debt that day.
[Chorus]
He carried more than a cross that day,
He carried every soul along the way;
Through every stripe and every thorn,
He saw the ones not even born.
Love kept Him walking toward Calvary,
Knowing that cross would set us free;
He carried more than a cross that day—
He carried you, He carried me.
[Verse 3]
The sky grew dark above the hillside,
As mercy hung between two thieves;
And when He cried, “It is finished,”
He finished it for you and me.
The nails could never hold the Savior;
It was His love that made Him stay,
And what looked like defeat on Calvary
Became salvation's victory day.
[Bridge]
He bore our shame,
He bore our sorrow,
He paid a debt
We could not pay.
And every soul
Who calls upon Him
Can find forgiveness
Still today.
[Final Chorus]
He carried more than a cross that day,
He carried every soul along the way;
Through every stripe and every thorn,
He saw the ones not even born.
Love kept Him walking toward Calvary,
Knowing that cross would set us free;
He carried more than a cross that day—
He carried you, He carried me.
[Outro]
More than a cross...
More than our shame...
He carried us
To Calvary that day.
