After 1975, many Vietnamese, especially in the South, fled the country by sea, hoping for a new life abroad. The journeys were fraught with danger.
In December 1977, Mr. Trương Văn Hào, his wife, and their 6-month-old son boarded a boat in Phú Quốc, hoping to reach the United States.
Less than a week later, pirates attacked their boat. A ship captain took the baby, and Mr. Hào’s wife was lost to the sea.
Mr. Hào survived, but he carried the grief of losing his wife and the anguish of his missing son. For over 30 years, he believed his child might still be alive.
In 2011, he returned to Thailand, following the few remaining clues in hopes of finding the son he had been separated from for decades.
