GOD SAT DOWN BESIDE ME Lyrics © 2026 MSW. All rights reserved. [Verse 1] I was drinking with my demons At a bar outside of town, Trying hard to drown the questions That the whiskey wouldn't drown. There was thunder in the distance, There was dust against the glass, When an old man took the stool beside me And said, “Mind if I ask?” I said, “Go ahead, I'm listening, Though I doubt you'll change my mind.” He smiled and ordered coffee, Said, “Son, I've got nothing but time.” [Chorus] Then God sat down beside me Like we'd known each other years, Didn't preach about salvation, Didn't ask about my sins or fears. I said, “Why'd You make this world so hard? Why do good men hurt and die?” He stared down at His coffee, Then looked me in the eye... Said, “Why do you blame Heaven For what people choose to do? I gave the world a conscience— What you do with it's on you.” [Verse 2] I said, “What about the innocent? What about the prayers unheard? What about the mother begging For You just to say one word?” He said, “You think I don't hear crying Because thunder doesn't roll? You keep looking for Me in the heavens While I'm standing in your soul. I'm the hand that feeds a stranger, I'm the coat somebody gave, I'm the man who runs toward danger When everybody runs away.” [Chorus] Yeah, God sat down beside me Like we'd known each other years, Didn't preach about salvation, Didn't promise there'd be no tears. I said, “Why don't You stop the hatred? Why don't You straighten what we've bent?” He said, “I gave you love and reason... You gave yourselves the internet.” [Instrumental] Low acoustic guitar, mournful harmonica and a slow slide guitar answering each line. [Verse 3] I couldn't help but laugh then, And I swear He laughed there too, I said, “If You're really who I think You are, I've got one more thing for You.” “What happens when it's over? When they lay me in the ground? Is there really something waiting, Or does everything go dark?” He leaned a little closer, Said, “You've worried all your life. Maybe death ain't something coming... Maybe you've been practicing it every night.” [Bridge] I said, “Are there really angels?” He said, “You've probably passed a few.” I said, “Is there really a Devil?” He said, “What's that matter to you?” “Spend less time fearing darkness. Spend more time making light. A man ain't measured by what scares him... He's measured by what he does when something ain't right.” [Final Chorus] Then God stood up beside me, Left some change there by His cup, I said, “Wait—you never told me How I'll know when my time is up.” He smiled and said, “You won't, son. That's what makes each morning count. You keep asking Me what's after... While you're wasting what you've got.” Then He walked out through the doorway As the eastern sky turned gold, And I stared into that empty cup At everything I'd been told. [Outro] The bartender came over, Said, “You ready for another round?” I pointed toward the doorway... Said, “What about that old man who was sitting here just now?” He looked at me kinda sideways. Said, “Buddy... You've been sitting here alone.” One slow slide-guitar note. [Spoken] Maybe I was. Maybe I wasn't.
