They climbed into the jagged folds of the Zagros Mountains, where the paths twisted like veins and stones rolled underfoot. Wind hissed through the canyons and darkness pooled quickly, wrapping the slopes in a cold, indifferent silence. Yet the two pressed on, scanning shadows for movement, calling softly into the night, their breath turning to mist. Each step was a mixture of exhaustion and resolve, as though they were not only seeking the missing goats but also testing the strength of their own endurance.
