🎙️🎷 E-40 - Choices (Yup) Part II | 1950's Blues Version
Recorded live at The Shipyard Swing, Vallejo, 1938.
From the bustling docks of Mare Island to the quiet corners of the town, Vallejo in '38 was a place where every day brought a fresh batch of decisions. And no man understood that better than Earl "Forty" Stevens. With a slick back and a sharp suit, Forty wasn't just a singer; he was the town's straight shooter, laying out the stark realities of life with a voice like aged bourbon and a knowing wink.
The band at The Shipyard Swing kicked things off with a low rumble from the stand-up bass, a mournful wail from the trombone, and a piano ticklin' the ivories like a whispered secret. Then Forty stepped to the mic, his eyes scanning the smoky room, and launched into his latest number, "Choices (Yup)." It wasn't fancy talk; it was the raw truth, delivered with the kind of rhythm that made you tap your foot even if your pockets were empty.
He sang of the crossroads folks faced daily in Vallejo – deciding whether to try your luck at the shipyard, or pack up and head for the city lights. Whether to trust a new face, or keep your cards close to your chest. Each verse a question, each chorus a simple, undeniable "Yup" or a firm "Nope." He crooned, "You gonna hustle for your supper? Yup. You gonna let 'em push you 'round? Nope." The crowd, full of sailors, dockworkers, and dames with eyes that knew too much, hung on every word, recognizing their own lives in his plainspoken wisdom.
Critics are callin' it "the brass-tacks blues for the everyday man"—a sound that cuts through the fog of hard times with clarity and a beat you can count on. It's E-40 showing that even when the world throws you a curveball, a man still makes his own calls.
