Ohio has a stone column taller than the Statue of Liberty standing on an island in Lake Erie, a winery built on top of the largest geode on Earth, and a namesake river that legally belongs to Kentucky.
From the interstate, Ohio looks flat, and about two-thirds of it really is. Twenty thousand years ago, a sheet of ice as much as a mile thick saw to that. But the ice never reached the southeast, and everywhere else it left the state a lot stranger than it looks from the road.
In this video, we're crossing all of Ohio, north to south: 60 places in six regions, from the shore of Lake Erie down to the Ohio River. Along the way: glacial grooves longer than a football field, a castle that was only ever a gatehouse, the prison from The Shawshank Redemption, a seven-story basket that has to stay a basket, a 2,000-year-old moon observatory that spent a century as a golf course, and the highest point in Ohio, which sits on a school campus.
And at the very end, how a Supreme Court ruling put the river along Ohio's southern border on Kentucky's side.
