The History of Lighters — The Incredible Device That Was Invented Before Matches The history of lighters is far stranger than you might think. Most people assume matches came first—but the story of the lighter goes back to the early 19th century, when inventors were already developing ingenious ways to create fire instantly. In this documentary, Plain Origins explores the incredible history of lighters, from early fire-starting devices to the invention of Döbereiner’s Lamp, the evolution of portable lighters, the rise of flint and ferrocerium ignition, and the iconic designs that eventually led to modern Zippo, butane, disposable, and electric lighters. We’ll uncover: • Who invented the first practical lighter? • How did the first lighter work before modern matches? • Why was Döbereiner’s Lamp so revolutionary? • How did lighters evolve from large chemical devices into pocket-sized tools? • When did flint, ferrocerium, and butane change lighter technology? • How did wartime use help make lighters popular? • How did brands like Zippo and BIC transform the lighter forever? • Why did the lighter ultimately become one of the world’s most recognizable everyday inventions? From strange 19th-century fire-making machines to the pocket lighters we recognize today, this is the story of an invention that helped humanity carry fire in an entirely new way. Watch until the end to discover how the simple lighter evolved through nearly two centuries of innovation.
