Honey is often marketed as one of the purest, simplest foods on the planet, unchanged since prehistoric humans first raided wild beehives. It has also become, according to multiple independent laboratory testing investigations, one of the single most widely and systematically faked food products in the entire global food supply, with a significant share of "honey" sold internationally cut with cheap sugar syrup, or in several documented major fraud cases, containing no actual honey at all. Underneath that modern fraud crisis sits an even more serious and less visible one: the sustained global collapse of honeybee populations, a crisis serious enough that commercial beekeepers now truck millions of hives thousands of miles across the country every year just to keep American agriculture pollinated at all. In this episode, we trace honey from a fifteen-thousand-year-old cave painting in Spain, through ancient Egyptian tombs stocked with edible honey for the afterlife, into a modern international fraud investigation that uncovered fake honey moving through some of the largest food companies on Earth, and into the mysterious, still not fully understood collapse of the pollinators the entire crop is now failing without. This is the real story hiding inside the jar shaped like a bear. 🔔 Subscribe for weekly deep dives into the hidden, uncomfortable history behind the foods we eat every single day. #FoodHistory #HiddenHistory #Honey
