True Romance Is the Ultimate Quentin Tarantino Movie He Didn’t Direct

TRUE ROMANCE (1993) REVIEW — Tony Scott, Quentin Tarantino & the Ultimate Cool Movie Is True Romance a Quentin Tarantino movie or a Tony Scott movie? That’s the question at the heart of this review. Tony Scott directed True Romance, but Quentin Tarantino wrote the screenplay—and both filmmakers leave an unmistakable mark on the film. From the unforgettable dialogue and characters to Tony Scott’s kinetic visual style, True Romance is a fascinating collision of two very different cinematic voices. In this review, I dive into why I absolutely love True Romance, Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette as Clarence and Alabama, Gary Oldman’s unforgettable Drexl, Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken’s legendary Sicilian scene, Brad Pitt’s hilarious performance, Val Kilmer’s Elvis, and the incredible supporting cast featuring James Gandolfini, Tom Sizemore, and more. I also talk about the film’s themes of cool, Tarantino’s obsession with movies, the influence of Badlands and Taxi Driver, Tony Scott’s direction, Hans Zimmer’s iconic “You’re So Cool” score, and why True Romance feels more like a Tony Scott film than a traditional Quentin Tarantino movie. This is also part of my ongoing Quentin Tarantino retrospective, following my review of Reservoir Dogs. And yes—I'm talking about the Arrow Video release of True Romance, including the different cuts of the film. What do you think? Is True Romance a Quentin Tarantino movie, a Tony Scott movie, or the perfect combination of both? And while you're here: 🎬 What is your favorite Quentin Tarantino screenplay? 🎥 What is your favorite Tony Scott movie? Let me know in the comments!
