How is Egypt building a massive artificial river inside the Sahara? This is the engineering story of the New Delta Project, Egypt's plan to turn over 2 million acres of desert into farmland.
With more than 100 million people and 95% of the country covered by desert, Egypt can no longer rely on the Nile alone. So it's taking polluted agricultural drainage water, cleaning it at the world's largest water treatment plant, and pumping it uphill through a 170 km artificial river into the Western Desert.
