Setting sail in 1958: a ship's sign, farewells on a quay, white cliffs and open sea, then a sunlit harbour with a floating pontoon bridge, a floating market and a liner at the quay.
When and where: The voyage home begins: farewells at Southampton on 18 May 1958 aboard the Sibajak, then a harbour with a floating pontoon bridge and floating market, taken to be Willemstad, Curacao, from his note "curaco". Dated from the Sibajak sailing of 18 May 1958 and a ship call at Willemstad on 29 May, from a passenger account of the same voyage and a ship history.
What is in the film:
00:00 A ship's sign reading "BAR-RESTAURANT SALOONS" with an arrow, then four men in coats on deck
00:12 Passengers at the rail and a coastline of white cliffs from the sea
00:26 A group in coats and headscarves, one waving, then a crowd waving from the quay below a white lifebuoy
00:42 A gangway, cranes and a covered conveyor, men on the quay, and long sawtooth-roofed dock sheds with a waving crowd
00:56 An estuary, churned wake and open sea
01:10 The bow with rail and bollards, passengers in deck chairs, and a man smiling
01:28 Two women seated at the bow, bow spray, and passengers watching distant hills
01:42 Dutch-gabled waterfront buildings with cars, a modern block and a moored sailing ship
01:56 A crowd crossing a long floating pontoon bridge with a white railing, and yachts moored beside an arcaded building
02:10 A crowded promenade, a shop street with a round "20" sign, and a large liner at the quay
02:22 A floating market under canvas awnings with fish and fruit, and schooners alongside red-roofed buildings
02:40 A street with a crowd, then shed roofs with large lettering including "NEDER", "HOL" and "KONINKLIJKE" and "CIA REAL"
02:54 Harbourfront buildings, white colonial-style buildings with cars, and a ship below a hill with a fort, ending at 03:07
Ted's handwritten notes for this film list "curaco - Panama canal", and the pontoon bridge and waterfront here fit that note, though no sign names the harbour. A UK outward passenger list shows Ted sailed from Southampton on 18 May 1958 on the m.s. Sibajak (Royal Rotterdam Lloyd), bound for New Zealand and Australia and ticketed to Sydney. The lifebuoy at 00:34 shows no legible lettering.
Filmed on 8mm by Edward "Ted" William Mills (born 1934, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia) on his voyage home to Australia.
