Ten billion years ago, before the Sun or the Earth existed, something enormous was already sitting in the dark. The James Webb Space Telescope just found it, and it may have grown up too early. XLSSC 122 is a galaxy cluster 10.4 billion light-years away. Its core holds about 65 trillion times the mass of our Sun, and most of that mass is dark matter. In this video we look at what Webb saw, how astronomers weigh something invisible with gravitational lensing, and why this one cluster could make us rewrite part of the story of the universe. ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 Something that shouldn't exist yet 0:46 The machine: James Webb 1:04 A million miles from home 1:12 Why Webb sees in infrared 1:45 Meet XLSSC 122 2:09 A baby photo of the universe 2:50 Dark matter: the invisible stuff 3:55 85% of all matter 5:03 Einstein's trick: mass bends light 5:44 Strong gravitational lensing 6:11 Weighing the invisible 6:39 Hubble vs Webb 7:13 65 trillion Suns 7:57 Why it's a problem 8:21 It's still colliding 9:14 Rare freak or the first of many? 9:33 Ghost light 10:22 What's next 11:05 The shadow of the invisible 💬 Do you think XLSSC 122 is a rare freak, or the first of many?
