I used to think being a good communicator meant speaking confidently, never stumbling over your words, and always knowing what to say. But after reading How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, I started looking at communication skills a little differently.
Growing up, I was pretty quiet and shy. I often felt ignored, talked over, or brushed aside. As I got older, I wanted to become someone people could rely on, someone who could bring people together and build meaningful relationships.
Over the years, I've learned that improving your communication skills isn't necessarily about becoming a better talker. Sometimes it's about learning to listen more, ask better questions, understand different perspectives, and make people feel like they matter.
In this video, I share four lessons from Dale Carnegie's book that have helped reinforce what I've been learning about communication, confidence, and connecting with people.
I talk about overcoming awkward small talk, becoming a better listener, handling disagreements without turning them into arguments, and why something as simple as remembering someone's name can make a lasting impression.
I also share a personal story about my brother and why becoming someone who brings people together has meant so much to me.
I'm not an expert at any of this. I still catch myself interrupting people or struggling to find the right words. But that's what personal growth is all about. Recognizing where we can improve and making an effort to get a little better each day.
If you've ever struggled with communication, felt overlooked, or wanted to build stronger relationships, I hope something from my experience helps you along your own journey.
Rise up with me.
