How Australia’s Ethnic Composition Changed | 1947–2026 Explore nearly 80 years of demographic and ancestry change in Australia through an animated bar chart race showing major ethnic, cultural and origin groups from 1947 to 2026. This visualization follows major ancestry and origin communities including English, Irish, Scottish, Chinese, Italian, German, Indian, Greek, Dutch, Vietnamese, Filipino, Lebanese, Polish, Maltese, Croatian, New Zealander, South African, Sri Lankan, French, Serbian, Macedonian, Russian, Turkish, Korean, Nepalese, Pakistani, Afghan, Welsh and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations. Australia has experienced one of the world’s most significant demographic transformations since the end of World War II. Large-scale post-war migration initially brought millions of people from Britain and continental Europe. Later decades saw increasing migration from East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East and other parts of the world. As a result, modern Australia has become one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. The Australian Census measures ancestry, which represents the cultural or ethnic origins with which people identify. In the 2021 Census, respondents could report up to two ancestries, meaning ancestry categories can overlap and should not be added together to calculate Australia’s total population. Australian Bureau of Statistics For example, the largest reported ancestries in the 2021 Census included English (8.39 million), Australian (7.60 million), Irish (2.41 million), Scottish (2.18 million), and Chinese (1.39 million). Australian Bureau of Statistics For this visualization, Australian ancestry is not displayed as a separate bar, because it is a broad self-identified ancestry rather than a single ethnic origin. To maintain a clearer origin-based visualization, part of this category has been redistributed among selected historical ancestry groups using a modeling approach. These redistributed figures should therefore be understood as estimates rather than official ABS ethnicity counts. Australia does not have a directly comparable annual ethnic-group dataset extending back to 1947. Historical values in this visualization are therefore reconstructed using Census ancestry data, historical population and migration patterns, and interpolation between benchmark years. Pre-2001 figures and annual values between Census benchmarks are modeled historical estimates. The 2022–2026 group figures are projections and are not official 2026 Census ancestry results. Changes in Census questionnaires can also affect comparisons between years. ABS notes that ancestry responses are influenced by questionnaire design and how response options are presented. Australian Bureau of Statistics The 2026 Census allows respondents to report up to four ancestries, compared with up to two in 2021, which will also affect direct comparisons with earlier Census data. Australian Bureau of Statistics This video is intended to visualize Australia’s long-term demographic transformation and should be interpreted as a combination of official Census benchmarks and historical demographic estimates, rather than a continuous official annual ethnicity series.
