This is a 15-minute video of highlights from the Jan. 30, 1974 National Basketball Association game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Celtics in Boston, won by the Celtics, 120-108.
It is film, with no sound, from the WCVB Collection, transferred by Northeast Historical Film. Thanks to NHF for the OK to post it with watermarks; for information on obtaining a clean copy visit www.oldfilm.org. There were enough score/time markers to make this better chronologically, but a clip or two still may be out of order.
The Celtics weren't playing any defense but they were fast-breaking on offense, ahead 35-22 after one and 62-55 at the half. They then went on a 13-2 third-quarter run sparked by guard Paul Westphal (15 points, 8 assists). Jo Jo White was the high man for Boston with 27.
Cavaliers coach Bill Fitch didn't like the discrepancy in free throw attemps (34-11 for the Green). But he had to love watching the league's oldest player, guard Lenny Wilkens (36), have a great game for Cleveland. The former Providence College star led the Cavs with 24 points and added 8 assists, driving to the hoop like the old days with the Sonics.
