The drive along the battered coastal road reminded us of the long delays in repairs, but once we reached the sea, the excitement was undeniable. Waves were cooking, fishermen were checking up and down, and sardine crews were preparing nets — all signs that sardines were near. Shelly Beach and St Michaels were quiet, with ski‑boats launching but no dark patches of fish. Southbroom offered surfers and sunshine, yet still no sardines. Then, at Silver Beach in Port Edward, everything changed. The car park was full, boats were launching, and crews were hauling nets. The Snyman and Fraser teams were on site, with crates of sardines moving fast — prices dropping from R800 to R500 as the catch piled up. The action was intense. Engines stalled, waves crashed, and boats fought to stay upright while gannets dived overhead. Nets stretched across the sand, each requiring dozens of workers and Land Cruisers to haul them in.
