Archaeologists Scanned the Amazon With Lasers — And What They Found Changed Everything
In 2024, a laser survey over the Ecuadorian Amazon found more than 6,000 earthen
platforms buried under the canopy — the largest ancient city network ever
discovered in the Amazon, and it rewrote what we thought we knew about the
rainforest.
For centuries, the Amazon was treated as untouched wilderness — too hostile, too
poor in soil, too dense to ever hold a civilisation. Then archaeologists pointed
lasers at it.
Using LiDAR, which fires laser pulses from an aircraft and reconstructs the
ground beneath the trees, a team led by Stéphen Rostain of France's CNRS mapped
roughly 300 square kilometres of the Upano Valley in the eastern foothills of
the Andes. What came back wasn't jungle. It was a grid: over 6,000 rectangular
earthen platforms arranged into at least 15 distinct settlements, linked by
wide, perfectly straight roads that cross each other at right angles. Around
them, agricultural terraces and engineered drainage.
The oldest of it dates to roughly 500 BCE and the complex stayed occupied until
somewhere between 300 and 600 CE — meaning this society was building urban
infrastructure in the Amazon at the same time the Roman Republic was expanding.
Researchers estimate the population ran into the tens of thousands, possibly the
hundreds of thousands.
In this video we break down exactly what the LiDAR revealed, how a civilisation
this large stayed hidden for 2,500 years, why the roads matter more than the
platforms do, and what it means for every other patch of unscanned rainforest
still out there.
