The island sits in the western Cyclades and looks like nowhere else in them: instead of whitewashed cubes and blue domes, the coast at Sarakiniko is pale volcanic rock worn smooth into rolling curves, running straight down into water clear enough to read the stone through. That is the colour this hour is scored for — white, turquoise and linen, and nothing else. The instruments are Greek and all new to this channel. Santouri, the hammered dulcimer, opens the hour with struck metal that rings and fades. Laouto, the long-necked lute, is the dry woody voice through the middle; lyra is bowed in short rhythmic stabs rather than long phrases; tsampouna, the island bagpipe, carries the last stretch. Baglamas and souravli take a chapter each. Toumbeleki, zilia and shaker hold the rhythm, and wordless humming sits on five of the ten chapters and nowhere else. Klima is the fishing village where the boathouses are painted in bands of colour at the waterline, and it is the high point of the hour — laouto, toumbeleki and claps together, the fullest the mix ever gets. Plathiena, a quiet cove on the north coast, eases it back. Cool Stone Hour ends where the day does, on stone that has finally stopped holding the heat.
