Everything in this video is real — until I tell you it is not. We start with a fish you could hold in one hand, and we finish with something wrapped around the entire world. Fourteen sea monsters, ranked from smallest to largest, in one continuous line. Somewhere in the middle, that line crosses from animals we have caught and measured into creatures people believed in for centuries and never proved. The strange part is how recently some of them crossed it. The giant squid was a sailor's exaggeration until a Japanese team photographed a live one in 2004. The Kraken was written into a serious book of natural history in 1752 by a bishop who thought he was describing an animal. So the question this video leaves you with is not which of these are real. It is how confident you want to be about the rest of the list. CHAPTERS 0:00 Everything here is real — until it is not 0:28 Small enough to hold — 1. Fangtooth 1:03 2. Black swallower 1:34 3. Cthulhu 9:02 The ocean's track record WHAT THE NUMBERS COME FROM Fangtooth ~18 cm, largest teeth relative to body size of any fish. Colossal squid ~500 kg, with estimates to 700; eyes 27-40 cm across, the largest eyes of any animal that has ever lived. Livyatan 13.5-17.5 m, teeth 36.2 cm — the largest biting teeth ever measured on any animal; skull found in the Peruvian desert in 2008, described in 2010. Megalodon estimates range 15-18 m and keep shifting, because almost all we have is teeth. Where researchers disagree, we say so in the video instead of picking the biggest number. The Kraken comes from Erik Pontoppidan's natural history of Norway, 1752. Scylla is from the Odyssey. Bakunawa is Philippine. Leviathan is from the Book of Job. Cthulhu was written by H. P. Lovecraft in 1928. We made a full episode on Jörmungandr — it is linked on the channel. If this pulled you in, leave a like. It genuinely helps this channel reach people who would love this kind of thing.
