'THE WOOD BESIDE MY ALTAR | AlternetMatrix'
I admired the faith of others. I listened to their prayers and warmed myself by their fire. Then I went home and left the wood beside my own altar untouched.
'The Wood Beside My Altar' is a prayer about that moment of recognition. It is about waiting for permission when there is already a step to take, counting what we lack while overlooking what we can give, and finding the courage to begin again after stopping so many times.
David asked, “Is there not a cause?” (1 Samuel 17:29). Esther stepped forward without knowing the outcome (Esther 4:16). And the call came to Ezra: “Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee” (Ezra 10:4).
The fire in this song is an image of a life brought before the LORD in prayer and obedience. Its promise is small enough to keep: 'I will lay the wood today. Tomorrow, I will come again.'
