Netherton Hub - Construction Update - Best Viewed From Above

In this video we visit for the second time the large infrastructure being built just outside Peterhead as part of SSEN plan to become net zero. The Netherton Hub is a major electricity transmission complex located west of Peterhead, near Longside in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Developed by SSEN Transmission it is recognised as one of the most critical clean energy infrastructure developments in Europe. The hub serves as a central colocation point for Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) transmission systems. This infrastructure connects massive offshore wind generation in the north of Scotland and routes that power to high-demand centers across the UK. The hub is designed to handle 6 GW of infrastructure capacity, which is enough to power approximately 6 million UK homes. The massive site includes A 400kV substation and a 132kV substation The Spittal to Peterhead High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter station The Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) HVDC converter stationThe Eastern Green Link 5 (EGL5) HVDC converter stationAn operations base, transmission hall, and spares warehouse. Project Timeline & Status August 2025: Planning permission in principle was officially granted by Aberdeenshire Council following two years of community consultations. June 2026: Main construction officially commenced following a groundbreaking event. Balfour Beatty is delivering the main construction works.Ongoing Progression: Steelwork construction and enabling works are heavily underway. 2032: Expected completion date for the wider overhead line upgrades connecting the hub back into the main Peterhead grid
