What if one injection could someday help control heavy menstrual bleeding for an entire cycle?
HMB-003 is a new experimental peptide being developed as a long-acting, non-hormonal treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding.
Unlike hormone-based treatments, HMB-003 targets an enzyme called plasmin, one of the key enzymes responsible for breaking down fibrin and dissolving blood clots.
By directly inhibiting plasmin, researchers hope HMB-003 could help existing clots remain stable for longer and reduce excessive bleeding.
What makes HMB-003 especially interesting is its potential duration.
Preclinical research suggests a single injection may produce antifibrinolytic activity lasting around one week, raising the possibility of once-per-cycle dosing.
But there is an important catch.
HMB-003 has only just entered human clinical testing, so researchers still need to determine its safety, dosing, effectiveness and whether the results seen in preclinical studies will translate into real patients.
In this video, we break down:
• What HMB-003 is
• How plasmin breaks down blood clots
• Why blocking plasmin may reduce bleeding
• How HMB-003 differs from tranexamic acid
• Why researchers are investigating once-per-cycle dosing
• What the research currently shows
• What scientists still need to prove
This is one of the newest peptides entering human research, and it could represent an entirely different approach to women's health.
