What if losing your balance is actually the point of good riding? Nuno Oliveira called shoulder-in "the aspirin of riding" — the exercise he claimed fixes almost everything. In Exercise 3 of our series, that theory finally goes from the ground into the saddle. Kira and Helios walk the full pattern — corner, circle, straight line — following La Guérinière's rule that lateral work should finish straight. Rupert works it in-hand as a reminder, then coaches from the ground as Kira takes over — "ground monkey" to "sky monkey" — before stepping away so she rides it alone. 🎥 FREE Helios Harmony Intro Course: https://longridehome.com/onoutpout 📚 All Books Mentioned: https://longridehome.com/books 🎟️ Xenophon Press Discount Code: 7greatCUSTOMER (7% off) https://xenophonpress.com This isn't a polished demo reel. Partway through, Rupert admits on camera the stop wasn't dead straight — and uses it to make a point: dressage's biggest myth is that you're meant to stay in balance all the time. You're not — you're constantly losing it and finding it again, just as you did learning to walk. Rupert's authority here isn't abstract: his own teacher, Luis Valença, learned this exercise from Nuno Oliveira, who learned it from his master, Miranda — a direct chain of hands, which is what "classical" actually means. He also credits Richard Williams at Xenophon Press, whose translations keep Oliveira's writing alive. Rather than a solo performance, this is a transmission — ground to saddle, master to master. Here's what's covered: ✔️ Why Nuno Oliveira called shoulder-in "the aspirin of riding" ✔️ The corner secret: why every corner you ride is already shoulder-in ✔️ The full pattern — corner, circle, straight line — and La Guérinière's finishing rule ✔️ "Ground monkey, sky monkey": transferring in-hand aids onto Kira's seat, leg, and rein ✔️ Where the outside rein actually goes, and why ✔️ How discreet aids replace kicking and yanking entirely ✔️ The stop that wasn't dead straight — and why that's exactly the point ✔️ Why classical training was never meant to be a solo pursuit ✔️ Kira's own reflection on riding a horse prepared in hand first 🕛 Timestamps: 00:00 – Shoulder-in as "the aspirin of riding" 01:33 – The balance myth: losing it and retrieving it 02:06 – The pattern: corner, circle, straight line 02:34 – In-hand reminder begins 03:24 – La Guérinière's rule: finish lateral work straight 04:24 – Placing the outside rein at the wither 06:04 – Mounted work begins: ground monkey, sky monkey 08:12 – The second side — not dead straight 10:45 – Rupert steps away: Kira rides alone 12:00 – Why classical training was never a solo pursuit 15:07 – The lineage: Miranda to Oliveira to Valença to Rupert 16:28 – Kira on what's different learning it this way 17:21 – What's next: half-pass, travers, and renvers 📺 Related Videos: 🔹 Flying Changes In-Hand – Part 1:    • Flying Changes In-Hand – Part 1/7: The Sec...   🔹 Passage In-Hand – Part 1:    • How to teach your Horse Passage In‑Hand 1:...   🔹 Why Piaffe Fails Without In-Hand Work:    • The Mysteries of Piaffe: Richard Williams ...   🔹 Master Horse Hindquarter Activation Without Extra Leg Pressure!:    • Master Horse Hindquarter Activation Withou...   🔹 The ORIGINAL Half Halt according to La Guérinière Reveals | Inside Rein Explained:    • The ORIGINAL Half Halt according to La Gué...   🔹 Dressage Is Only 2 Easy Patterns!:    • Dressage Is Only 2 Easy Patterns!   🗂️ Playlists: The Old Masters of Dressage – From Ancient to Modern:    • The Old Masters of Dressage - History - an...   Discussions with Richard Williams about Classical Texts:    • Richard Williams - Xenophon Press   Live Free Ride Free Podcast:    • Live Free Ride Free with Rupert Isaacson   Equine Assisted World:    • Equine Assisted World with Rupert Isaacson   👤 About Long Ride Home: Rupert Isaacson is a horseman, bestselling author, and founder of Helios Harmony — classical horsemanship rooted in the Old Masters.
