Waylon Jennings Invited Kenny Rogers On Stage to Mock Him – Nobody Was Ready For What Kenny Did

Lubbock, Texas, September 7th, 1980: Buddy Holly's birthday. Waylon Jennings, the baddest outlaw in country music, had told a magazine that Kenny Rogers was "lounge music in a cowboy hat" who wouldn't last two songs in Lubbock with nothing but a guitar. So when he spotted Kenny hiding in the back row of his hometown show, Waylon called him up on stage in front of 3,000 people to prove it. Kenny walked down that aisle carrying something in his wallet he had never shown anyone in 23 years. A tortoiseshell guitar pick. And a secret that tied him, Waylon and Buddy Holly together. #KennyRogers #WaylonJennings #BuddyHolly #Lubbock #CountryMusicLegends
