Unpacking Plan Vélo: How Paris plans to create more cycling for all

Paris is changing its streets quickly. The re-election of mayor Anne Hidalgo, who has put the Parisian streetscape at the centre of her campaign, amounts to a powerful mandate from Parisians to continue this work. Her increased majority can also be seen as a call to move more quickly, covering more of the city, and connecting the network of infrastructure in the city centre with the greater Paris region. To deliver on these ambitions, the city has put together a team and a vision: The new Plan Vélo. Released last month, Plan Vélo has been widely reported on internationally. Most strikingly, the plan communicates a distinctly Parisian, and perhaps French, model for making cycling accessible to all ages and abilities. In this webinar, Brett Petzer and Stephen Kurz review Paris’s cycling context, based on recent study trips and a visit from the city’s dedicated bike planning team, followed by a tour of the Plan Vélo itself. Together with Sébastien Marrec, an activist and researcher working on this ‘Mission Vélo’, they discuss how Paris’s vision for cycling and its streets is distinct from other models.
