Where does your trash go after the garbage truck drives away? Decades ago, researchers dug into a landfill and pulled up a hot dog that was still recognizable. And that hot dog has a lot to say about what "throwing away" really means.
In this episode of Behind The Daily, we follow one trash bag from your curb to the landfill. We look at how a modern landfill is built, why buried trash doesn't rot the way you'd expect, what happens to the gas and liquid it produces, how much trash is burned for energy, why plastic recycling is so low, and what happens to waste in parts of the world without proper landfills.
📊 KEY FACTS (U.S. figures are for 2018, the latest national breakdown used in this video; global figures are from the World Bank)
• The U.S. generated about 292 million tons of municipal trash. About half was landfilled, about 12% burned for energy, and about 32% recycled or composted.
• Only about 8.7% of U.S. plastic was recycled; about 27 million tons went to landfills.
• Worldwide, about 2 billion tonnes of municipal waste is produced a year, and at least a third isn't managed safely.
Note: Landfill conditions vary widely by climate and design, and decomposition rates differ from site to site. Figures are rounded for storytelling.
