The Blizzard That Buried a City — New York 1888
On March 12, 1888, Roscoe Conkling stepped out of his law office on Wall Street and faced a simple choice: pay $50 for a cab ride home, or walk three miles through the approaching storm.
He refused the cab.
Within hours, New York City was buried under one of the most devastating blizzards in American history.
The Great Blizzard of 1888 brought hurricane-force winds, massive snowdrifts, freezing temperatures, and more than thirty-six hours of relentless winter weather. New York's elevated railway system stopped. Telegraph and telephone lines collapsed. Doctors, police officers, firefighters, and ordinary citizens struggled to move through streets that had effectively disappeared beneath the snow.
Across the Eastern Seaboard, more than 200 ships were caught in the storm, while lifesaving crews fought through blinding conditions to rescue stranded sailors.
By the time the storm finally weakened, roughly 400 people had died across the region.
But the disaster did more than kill hundreds.
It exposed the vulnerability of America's greatest city and helped accelerate changes that would reshape New York's infrastructure — from underground transportation to buried communication lines.
This documentary explores the Great Blizzard of 1888, Roscoe Conkling's fatal journey, the collapse of New York's transportation system, the maritime disasters along the Eastern Seaboard, and the lasting changes the storm left behind.
