This scenic road trip begins in Al Buraimi, a historic city in northwestern Oman, located along the border with the United Arab Emirates. Al Buraimi has long been an important gateway between Oman and the interior regions, known for its palm groves, traditional forts, and desert-meets-mountain landscape. The journey starts near the Hamasa Border Crossing Station, a key crossing point that reflects the close geographic and cultural connection between Oman and the UAE.
As the drive continues southward, the scenery gradually shifts from open plains to rugged terrain. The route passes through Wadi Saa Road, where dry riverbeds cut through rocky landforms shaped by centuries of seasonal water flow. These wadis are a defining feature of northern Oman and are surrounded by foothills of the Western Hajar Mountains, which dominate the horizon throughout the journey.
Further along, the road follows Wadi Ajran Road, offering a quieter and more remote driving experience. The landscape here becomes increasingly mountainous, with exposed rock layers, winding valleys, and scattered acacia trees. This section highlights the raw and untouched beauty of Oman’s interior, far from major cities and tourist centers.
Approaching Yanqul – Wadi Sa Road, the drive enters an area known for its small villages and agricultural pockets. Places such as Al Ghubra (الغبرة) appear nestled between hills, where traditional houses blend naturally with the terrain. These settlements depend on ancient falaj irrigation systems and seasonal rainfall to sustain farming and daily life.
The route continues through villages including Al-Fath (الفتح), Al Khuzaryya (الخريزية), An Nuwamiyah (النوامية), and Al Murri (المري). Each village reflects a quieter side of Oman, with stone houses, date palms, and local roads winding through valleys carved by water and time. The surrounding hills are part of the lower ranges of the Hajar mountain system, creating dramatic backdrops and constant elevation changes.
One of the most visually striking sections passes near Qurn Rowybyah (قرن الرويبية), where rocky peaks rise sharply above the road. The drive then continues through Al Jofer (الجفر) and Karsh (كرش), areas known for their isolation and strong sense of rural character. The road here feels especially cinematic, with long curves, layered mountains, and vast open views.
As the journey progresses, the route passes Al Khuzaymiyah (الخزيمية), Al Dobdab (الدبداب), Al Hmaira (الحميراء), and Mokhaleef (مخيليف). These small settlements are scattered across valleys and hills, offering glimpses into traditional Omani village life surrounded by rugged nature. The terrain alternates between narrow mountain passes and wide open valleys.
The road briefly reconnects with Al Gobrah (الغبرة) before joining Sohar – Yanqul Road (Route 8). This section provides smoother driving conditions while still maintaining scenic mountain views. Passing Hayel Buithabah (حيل بولثيبة), the landscape opens slightly, with broader valleys and distant ridgelines.
The journey concludes in Yanqul (ولاية ينقل), a historic wilayat known for its ancient fort, mountain setting, and deep-rooted heritage. Yanqul lies within the interior mountain region of Oman, surrounded by rocky hills and wadis that reflect the strength and beauty of the land. This drive showcases the diversity of northern Oman’s landscapes, from border towns to remote mountain villages, offering an authentic and immersive road trip experience through the heart of the country.
