In the summer of 1893, America was collapsing. And its president disappeared. The country was in the middle of a financial panic. Banks were failing, gold was draining from the Treasury, and President Grover Cleveland believed one law, the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, had to be repealed. He called Congress back to Washington. Then he quietly boarded a friend’s yacht with a team of surgeons. Cleveland had a cancerous tumor in the roof of his mouth. In a secret operation that lasted about 90 minutes, doctors removed the tumor, five teeth and part of his upper jaw, entirely through his mouth, so no scar would give it away. The public was told he had a toothache. Two months later, a reporter named E.J. Edwards published the truth. The president’s allies, and newspapers across the country, called him a liar. His career was ruined. It took 24 years, and a confession from one of the surgeons, to clear his name. In this documentary, we tell the full story: the Panic of 1893, the discovery of the tumor, the plan to hide it, the operation on the Oneida, the exposé and the cover-up. We also ask the hard question: was the secrecy justified? SOURCES AND FURTHER READING William W.
