AVOID These 9 TOXIC Makeup Brands (And 3 That Are SAFE For Your Face)

Makeup is convenient and affordable, but heavy metals, hidden fragrance chemicals, talc sourcing and formula standards can vary dramatically between brands. We compared nine major makeup brands to find the strongest options. In this investigation, we compare makeup from Wet n Wild, CoverGirl, NYX, Maybelline, L’Oréal, Revlon, MAC, Claire’s and [#4 brand]. We examine ingredient labels and independent lab results, including heavy metals, talc and asbestos testing, PFAS, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, undisclosed “fragrance” blends and differences between US and European formulas. We also reveal three clean options that performed better under our review criteria: ILIA Beauty and Tower 28, Beautycounter and 100% PURE. The cheapest brand wasn’t necessarily the worst, and the “professional” label didn’t guarantee a cleaner formula.
