Join me for a beautiful spring walk along Harper Avenue beside Hagley Park North in Christchurch, New Zealand, filmed on Sunday, 20 September 2026. 🌸🌿
Spring has arrived in Christchurch, and Harper Avenue is looking especially beautiful at this time of year. The Yoshino cherry trees along the avenue are in full blossom, creating a wonderful display of soft white and pale pink flowers. Around them, the fresh green leaves, bright lawns and new growth of spring bring a real sense of freshness and renewal to the city. It is the kind of spring morning when you can simply enjoy the flowers, the greenery and the fresh air.
This is also a lovely place to experience everyday Christchurch life on a Sunday. Many people come out to enjoy the beautiful weather and seasonal flowers — walking along the avenue, taking photographs, walking their dogs, running, cycling, or simply spending time outdoors. Crossing Harper Avenue, we continue into Little Hagley Park, where the spring scenery continues. It feels like a true Sunday outdoor gathering place where people can slow down, enjoy nature and appreciate the simple pleasures of life.
Harper Avenue is particularly special in spring because the Yoshino cherry trees here are well known for their seasonal display. Christchurch City Council describes the path around North Hagley Park as becoming a boulevard of Yoshino cherry blossom in spring, with flowering bluebells in Little Hagley Park. The cherry trees along Harper Avenue were planted for Arbor Day in 1936, making this spring display part of the city's long horticultural history.
Hagley Park itself is one of the defining green spaces of central Christchurch. Covering about 165 hectares, the park has been at the heart of the city since the 1850s and includes North and South Hagley Park. Its wide open spaces, mature trees, walking paths and gardens provide a beautiful natural setting right next to the city centre.
Christchurch is widely known as New Zealand's Garden City, a character closely connected with its parks, gardens, trees and beautiful seasonal displays. The city was established as a planned settlement in 1850 and became New Zealand's first city by Royal Charter in 1856. Today, Christchurch has an estimated population of around 419,200 people (June 2025), making it the largest city in the South Island.
The cherry blossom season is relatively short, so if you are in Christchurch around September, this is one of those seasonal sights worth making time for. The exact timing varies from year to year depending on weather conditions, but the main blossom display can last roughly a couple of weeks. 🌸
So come along and enjoy a peaceful spring walk through one of Christchurch's most beautiful seasonal landscapes — full cherry blossom, fresh green trees and lawns, people enjoying their Sunday, and the unmistakable feeling of spring in New Zealand's Garden City.
