The golden lampstand was designed like a living tree—with a central trunk, branches, flowers, and lamps. Its continuously burning lamps provided light within the Holy Place. In this presentation, we consider the lampstand as a symbolic “tree of life,” representing light, life, and the continuous processes that sustain life. The human lungs likewise play a vital role in sustaining life. They receive the breath of life and continuously exchange gases essential for the body's functions. Just as a tree interacts with the atmosphere and uses gases in the process of producing and sustaining living matter, the respiratory system continually exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide. The connection extends further. Air enters through the nose, where the sense of smell begins, and information from odors is transmitted to specialized areas of the brain. In our sanctuary analogy, this may be compared with the relationship between the golden lampstand, the altar of incense, and the Most Holy Place.
