Is the Mk2 Golf GTI 16V the ultimate hot hatch? I drove this stunning 1988 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V, finished in the exceptionally rare Calypso Green. With 139bhp, a kerb weight of under 1,000kg, no power steering and a aspirated 1.8-litre engine, the Mk2 GTI comes from an era when hot hatches were all about light weight, mechanical feel and making the driver do the work. This particular example has undergone an extensive restoration, documented by more than 200 photographs, and is now in seriously impressive condition. In this video, I take a closer look at the restoration, explore what makes the 16V so special, and most importantly get behind the wheel to find out whether this 1980s icon still deserves its reputation as one of the greatest hot hatches ever made.
