Trailing 5-0 in sets at Lakeside, Frimley Green, Eric "The Crafty Cockney" Bristow mounts a historic comeback against Jocky Wilson in the 1989 Final!
---
For the first time in Embassy World Professional Darts Championship history, the two most charismatic giants of the 1980s—five-time World Champion Eric "The Crafty Cockney" Bristow MBE and 1982 World Champion Jocky Wilson of Kirkcaldy, Scotland—collided in the 1989 Final at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green. With £20,000 on the line, Master of Ceremonies Martin Fitzmaurice introduced the two legends to a cauldron of 1,300 fans waving Scottish Saltires and inflatable bananas, with referees Freddie Williams and Bruce Spendley calling the action and Sid Waddell and Tony Green in the BBC commentary box.
What unfolded over the next two hours was a match of two extraordinary halves. Playing the most explosive darts of his career, Wilson hammered seven 180s and an 11-dart leg to blitz a shell-shocked Bristow into a 5–0 set deficit at the mid-match interval—leaving the five-time champion one set away from a 33–1 whitewash. Refusing to surrender after battling back from dartitis to reach the final, Bristow emerged from the break to launch the greatest comeback bid Lakeside had ever witnessed. Firing a 12-dart leg, surviving a match dart at Double 20 in the seventh set, and capitalizing when a rattled Wilson miscounted a 104 match checkout in the ninth set by throwing at Double 18 instead of Double 16, Bristow roared all the way back to 5–4 before burying a 130 bullseye checkout in the tenth set to save the match once more.
So gripping was the drama that the BBC postponed its scheduled evening programming to stay live at Frimley Green. This 1989 Lakeside showpiece stands as the crowning swan song of the golden 1980s era—capturing Jocky Wilson at the peak of his scoring powers and proving why Eric Bristow's competitive heart remains unmatched in darts history.
