The classic panorama is seen from the Rockpile, a natural accumulation of rock at the northern end of the lake rather than an artificial viewing platform. The lake’s vivid colour is also constantly changing: its turquoise appearance becomes strongest after the seasonal thaw as extremely fine mineral particles suspended in glacial meltwater scatter the light. Moraine Lake generally remains frozen longer than nearby Lake Louise and often reaches its most intense colour in mid-to-late July.
