Bruce Davison grew up on a New Zealand dairy farm, ran a cut-flower business for 18 years, then bought a 400-acre grazing property in southeast New South Wales — and discovered that growing grass was nothing like he expected. His search for answers took him through compost tea, holistic management, and finally Neil Kinsey's soil-balancing method, which produced an almost instant response in his pastures. Today he runs Soilsmith, consulting on soil chemistry for growers on nearly every continent.
His core message: balance is more important than quantity. All the primary minerals a plant needs have to be at their correct level relative to each other — not just piled on. He walks through how to read a soil test, why excess phosphorus (usually from overusing manure-based compost) is one of the worst problems you can create, why boron is the single highest-value fertilizer for a cash-strapped grower, and why he tells clients that if they feel like using mushroom compost, they should lie down until the feeling passes.
Also covered: the vegetable growers who saw 300% production increases and better shelf life after balancing their soil, why he thinks compost tea gave him no benefit over worm leachate, the difference between feeding the soil and feeding the plant with foliars, how to take a representative soil sample (0–10 cm, where 95% of plant nutrition comes from), and his controversial take that carbon is built by plants pulling it down — not by spreading compost on the surface.
Note: Bruce holds several positions that run against common organic and soil-food-web orthodoxy. We're sharing his 40 years of hands-on experience as one experienced practitioner's view — test on your own soil, and talk to an agronomist before making big changes. Reach Bruce at soilsmith.ag.
