I finally reached Iquitos, a city deep inside the Amazon in Peru. There is no road connecting it to the rest of the country — everything here comes by river and by air. I came expecting jungle. Instead I found a full city, run by the heat. In the afternoon the streets are almost empty, shops are shut, and my plan for the day fell apart. By evening the whole city comes alive. What I did in this video: Walked the local market, where I picked up cashew fruit Found handmade cigarettes, rolled by hand and sold in small batches (I don't smoke — these are a gift for a friend) Ate everyday local food — rice, egg, chicken, pulav Saw a building designed by the same man who designed the Eiffel Tower Learned the history that connects this city to India: how the British took rubber seeds out of the Amazon, which is why rubber plantations and tyre companies exist in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore today I'm Saurabh, an Indian travelling slowly through Latin America. This is part of my journey from Peru into the Amazon, and eventually along the Amazon River towards Brazil. If you like seeing what daily life is actually like in places far from India, subscribe — there is a lot more coming from the Amazon.
