On 24 August 1930, a peaceful gathering in Spin Tangi, Bannu, turned into one of the darkest episodes of the Civil Disobedience Movement in the North-West Frontier Province. Unarmed supporters of the political movement had gathered in Spain Tangi when British authorities opened fire on them. More than 70 people were reportedly killed, while hundreds were injured. Historical research also suggests that local authorities attempted to conceal the actual number of casualties. But what led to the tragedy? Who were the people gathered at Spain Tangi? Why did the British colonial government view the Khudai Khidmatgar movement as such a serious threat? And how was Spain Tangi connected to other major incidents of 1930, including the Qissa Khwani massacre in Peshawar and the Takkar tragedy in Mardan? In this Program, we explore the historical background of the Spin Tangi massacre, the Civil Disobedience Movement, the rise of the Khudai Khidmatgar movement, and the role of Bacha Khan (Abdul Ghaffar Khan) in mobilizing the people of the region through education, social reform, political awareness and nonviolent resistance. The program also features in-depth interviews with Dr. Sohail Khan and Dr. Muhib Wazir, who discuss the historical evidence surrounding Spain Tangi, the British crackdown on the Khudai Khidmatgars, the disputed casualty figures, and the broader significance of the tragedy. Based on historical research, including the work of historian Dr. Syed Waqar Ali Shah, this documentary revisits a largely forgotten chapter of the struggle against British colonial rule. 24 August 1930 — Spin Tangi, Bannu.
