Classic 250cc two-stroke racing from Adelaide International Raceway as Australia's leading 250cc riders contest Round 4 of the 1987 Shell Oils Australian Road Racing Championship.
This archive footage features Heat 1 of the 250cc class at Adelaide International Raceway (AIR) in South Australia, capturing another round of one of Australian motorcycle racing's great two-stroke eras.
The championship brought together established Australian road racers and a generation of younger competitors trying to make their mark on the national scene.
Riders featured through this 1987 250cc series include:
Donny Osbourne
Jeff Sayle
Roy Leslie
Graeme Morris
Hamish McNicol
David Horton
Daryl Beattie
🏆 THE 1987 250cc CHAMPIONSHIP
One rider particularly worth watching throughout these races is Donny Osbourne.
Osbourne came from a significant Australian motorcycle racing family. His grandfather Norm Osborne raced before the Second World War, while his father Alan Osborne became a successful racer during the 1960s and later competed in events including the Castrol Six Hour.
Donny continued that racing tradition and went on to become the 1987 Australian 250cc Road Racing Champion.
That gives these surviving races additional historical significance — we're watching individual battles that formed part of Osbourne's championship-winning season.
The field also contains considerable experience in Jeff Sayle, one of Australia's notable international racers, alongside riders including Roy Leslie, Graeme Morris, Hamish McNicol and David Horton.
And, of course, there is a young Daryl Beattie, still years away from the factory Honda and Suzuki 500cc Grand Prix career that would eventually make him one of Australia's best-known motorcycle racers.
🏁 ADELAIDE INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
This round takes the championship to Adelaide International Raceway, commonly known simply as AIR.
The South Australian circuit was an important part of Australian motorsport during this period, hosting motorcycles alongside major national car racing and drag racing events.
For the lightweight 250cc machines, AIR provides another very different challenge from the previous championship rounds at Sandown and Wanneroo Park.

📼 VHS MOTORSPORT PRESERVATION
This footage has been preserved from an original VHS-era television recording, so picture and sound quality reflect the age and limitations of the source.
Detailed records of Australian motorcycle racing from this period can be surprisingly difficult to locate today, making surviving television footage an important record of the riders, motorcycles and circuits of the era.
Aussie Motorsports is dedicated to preserving these old Australian motorsport recordings so they remain available for enthusiasts and future generations.
