An LN106 HiLux and a GQ Patrol airbrushed with horses. Shaun Whale and Jock McDonald buy each other a rig, then have one weekend in the shed to make them Glass House Mountains ready. Part 1 of the Bush Mechanic Challenge. The rules: buy your mate a second-hand 4WD, and between the two of you there's $5,000 all in — purchase price included — to get them track ready in 24 hours. Shauno hunted down an LN106 HiLux for Jock at $2,400, leaving $2,600 for mods. Jock came back with a $1,200 GQ Patrol covered in airbrushed stallions, leaving Shauno $3,800 to play with. Two very different strategies follow. Shauno spends his on getting the GQ moving: a 2in Fulcrum lift with offset caster bushes, 35in Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlars, a MyCoolman 44L fridge, a 5W GME UHF and a set of MaxTrax instead of a winch. Jock goes the other way — twin Lokka lockers front and rear in the solid-axle LN106, a second-hand bull bar bought for the price of a carton and re-coated in Raptor, a Runva 11XP winch and Teralume Icon driving lights, and no fridge at all. Matt Kinsella and Jesse turn up as reinforcements, the boys at Pinnacle 4x4 handle the diff surgery, and a Sparesbox care package covers the spares these old rigs are always going to need. Then it starts going wrong. The 35s don't clear, so it's out with the grinder and Bunnings garden edging to keep the flares legal. A snorkel hole gets cut into a mint GQ guard. The Patrol develops a savage engine knock that has everyone pointing fingers over a dropped spark plug, and it turns out to be timing. And with the clock at zero the HiLux won't start at all — steering lock hammered off, ignition switches jury-rigged for a push-button start, and a day-three carby rebuild before either rig is going anywhere. Part 2 takes them into the Glass House Mountains. 🔧 The first mod you'd do on a $5,000 build: ____ 📍 What you'd buy your mate as a cheap 4WD: ____ CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro 0:58 The LN106 HiLux Shauno bought for Jock 2:07 The horse-painted GQ Patrol 3:36 $5,000 budget and 24 hours on the clock 8:27 Suspension and locker install 17:17 Fitting 35s to the GQ 19:16 Cutting the snorkel hole 24:09 Day two on the tools 29:14 Spark plugs and a savage engine knock 39:42 Deadline — the HiLux won't start 43:38 Day three carby rebuild 48:21 Finished 4WD walk-around Mods we made: 2in Suspension Lift 35 inch tyres Second hand bull bar Winch install Front locker install Rear locker install UHF install Spark plug replacement Looking for the gear we used?
