What does it really take to become a successful anchor in India—voice, confidence, contacts, looks, or simply the ability to hold a crowd when nothing goes according to plan?
Abhay Kumar Pandey has spent more than two decades around stages, corporate events and live audiences, including years of work connected with IPL experiences. His story reveals a side of the event industry that audiences rarely see once the lights come on.
The profession of an anchor looks glamorous from the audience. The reality is much less predictable. A newcomer first has to convince someone to take a risk on them; a working anchor has to understand the brand, audience and format; and an established professional still has to protect reputation, relationships and commercial value. Abhay's journey is especially interesting because anchoring was not his original destination. He wanted to act, entered theatre, learned voice modulation and gradually discovered that the work he initially treated as a source of income could become his profession.
Then there is the world of IPL and live crowd engagement. Television viewers see the match; inside the venue, an entirely different performance is taking place between overs and during strategic time-outs. An MC may have only seconds to keep thousands of spectators engaged, trigger chants, create participation and maintain the atmosphere of the home team. Abhay describes this as spectator management—a useful reminder that a professional anchor is not simply someone who can speak into a microphone.
But the conversation becomes more interesting when it moves from the stage to the business behind the stage. How does a fresher get that first opportunity when agencies don't want to risk a major client's event on an unknown performer? When does networking create legitimate opportunity—and when does it become a business built around selling access to newcomers? Abhay's distinction is important: training can refine someone who has aptitude and commitment, but paying a fee cannot automatically manufacture stage presence.
The episode also examines how the profession itself has changed. Earlier generations struggled even to collect photographs from their events; today's aspiring anchors can create a portfolio, publish performance clips and build an audience directly through social media. Abhay argues that YouTube and digital content have made visibility substantially more accessible than during his Mumbai struggle.
That accessibility creates a new problem: when everybody can create a profile, what separates a professional from somebody who merely looks professional online?
Abhay's experience suggests that longevity comes from understanding context. A wedding, corporate event, live show and stadium cannot be handled with one rehearsed formula. The anchor represents the client in real time, and there is no edit button when thousands of people are watching. In the transcript, he specifically stresses that different event genres require different approaches and that even presentation and dress should reflect the brand being represented.
So this isn't simply a conversation about how to become an anchor.
It is about how a creative profession becomes a business without losing the skill that made it valuable in the first place.
If you are an aspiring anchor, emcee, actor, event professional, public speaker or someone trying to build a career around your personality and communication skills, this conversation offers a grounded look at what happens before the microphone switches on—and after the applause ends.
