In 2022 I built the camera gear for the Red Bull Cliff Diving VR film "Coming Up for Air" (Meta Quest, producer Jonathan Griffith). This is the making-of.
The brief: follow the diver from the platform, through the surface and under the water. Stereo 3D, 360°, slow motion, at his speed. No such camera existed, so I built three things:
1. The camera. 19 GoPros in a 3D 360 rig: 16K at 60 fps, 8K at 240 fps for slow motion. It has to hit the water and keep shooting.
2. The cable drop system. A programmable winch: 0 to 135 km/h in a second or two on the test bench, any acceleration profile. It drops the camera at the diver's free-fall speed, then stops it before the water or takes it smoothly under.
3. A light 16K 360 camera with a front stereo pair, 380 g, so a small drone could fly right next to the divers. A big drone that close to an athlete is dangerous.
What went wrong:
— There was no test site. A bridge in Opole is not a cliff-diving platform, so every real test happened at a competition.
— The first camera was printed in plastic. On impact with the water it broke into hundreds of pieces.
— In a week I redesigned it in aluminium; engineers from MovieBird in Opole helped with the design and milling. After that the camera survived hundreds of drops.
— Once water got into the housing: all 19 cameras came out and were dried with a hairdryer.
— Sydney was the last event of the season. In front of the Opera House it finally all worked.
On 5 November I'm speaking at Immersive Warsaw about this and other cameras I had to build because they didn't exist: high-speed aerial rigs, extreme macro 3D, weatherproof systems. Talk "The Camera Doesn't Exist Yet", 15:30, Kinoteka, Palace of Culture and Science, Warsaw.
